Contemporary Landscape Art
Steph feels deeply connected to the landscape of Scotland, and this is where she draws the majority of her inspiration. She creates art that reflects this spiritual connection and her passion for its preservation. When creating in situ she allows a conversation between herself and the landscape and aims to draw the essence of what she feels, rather than a desire to replicate its physical likeness. Her work is characterised by a distinct use of line, negative space, and a rich colour palette. Steph has a background in Art History and teaching, and has always used the natural world as a source of refuge and healing.
Using her hands to smudge and smear materials enables her to connect further with the work she is making. She enjoys the sense of urgency and energy this conveys in her work. Negative space is used playfully to guide the viewers gaze and allow pockets to be obscured. Her favourite mediums are inks and wax pastels, however, she often uses a variety of mixed media and can include pencils, pens, oil pastels and softs pastels in her work. Her colour palette often draws inspiration from the autumnal colours which she extracts from the Scottish landscape all year round.
She is a graduate in History of Art from the University of York and also from the Arts University Bournemouth, with additional qualifications in teaching. She is based in Glasgow, Scotland.
